Going Backward in Your Career Is Actually the Best Way Forward

When people envision a career as kids, their perception is, they have figured it all out. They eventually reach college and start harboring the feeling that they would surely get a job doing what they love in college, then work their way up the career ladder, they envision themselves as becoming all the more effective as well as fulfilled with time and as each year passes by and the performance reviews happen they would emerge more and more successful career wise.

career adviceThe reality dawns when the situation one finds oneself in is not near as rosy to the youthful vision as it ought to be. The person bounces around industries, working for huge corporations and really super small start ups as well. They have their share of pay cuts as well as pay rises.

Again they defy convention and set on a non linear career path by venturing into business for themselves. It seems they tread a meandering chequered path, professionally speaking. Amidst all this ensuing chaos, they are required to answer some of the trickiest questions as far as navigating this matrix is concerned.

On of the crucial things is to know when to backtrack and when to avoid the same. It is worth the mental effort to know when to accept the pay cut and when to go for a lower title. At times going backwards is actually the best way to move forwards in the long term scheme of things.

Career Development

At times a person wants to start all over again, say from being an analyst to nursing dreams of becoming a celebrated chef, for that matter a marketing manager who carries the dream of being a fashion blogger. It goes without saying a lesser title and ensuing pay cut come with their territory.

At the same time it would be unrealistic  to think that one  would straight away get hired as an executive chef after spending six long years in marketing. Starting over almost always means starting right at the bottom.

Till such time one happens to be doing something they really love, they are doing positive things that gets them excited and out of the  bed each and every morning. In such a scenario the fancy title and the real big money truly won’t make any difference as they would not matter  as much as they did earlier.

Though one may still continue to aspire for them, but with diminished value, if a person truly happens to be passionate about his or her work. Before one embarks on the journey, be careful about making the decision whether it is a good idea to backtrack or not.

careerIt is strongly advised that one gets a very solid grasp on the realistic vision for the future. It makes sense to think incrementally, say how a person would visualize and how would he or she like to shape the career in the next two, or five years or say 10 years for that matter.

What is it that drives someone to leave bed on a positive note for the day, and how does that person envisage success, is success a feeling of being fulfilled. In all earnestness, these queries must be answered honestly, only then the question of backtracking would be answered effectively. And no matter what the salary happens to be or the title anyway, what is really good is the forward momentum that it brings into the persons working and that bodes really well in the long term.
